Sclerotherapy remains the treatment of choice for leg veins.
It involves injecting the diseased vein with a sclerosant, a substance that is formulated to irritate the lining of the vein being treated, causing it to close down. The body’s natural healing process may take several weeks for complete resolution of the treated vein.
Sclerotherapy can be performed under direct vision for veins that lie close to the surface of the skin. For deeper veins, sclerotherapy is performed with ultrasound guidance.
Following Sclerotherapy, compression stockings are required for two weeks after treatment. Normal activities can continue but there may be some limitation on strenuous exercise.
